Internet data protection at the SBB

Protecting your privacy is a matter of prime importance to us. Below are some of the points covered by our Privacy Policy.

Scope

The SBB's Privacy Policy applies to all websites operated by SBB (hereinafter referred to as SBB websites). The SBB cannot guarantee that external websites accessible by links from SBB websites comply with the SBB's data protection requirements.

Use of information

You may visit our websites freely without being required to provide any personal details. A few non-personal items of usage data, such as your IP address, the website you last visited, which browser you are using, date and time, etc., are recorded so that we can identify trends and improve our online services. The data is anonymized, evaluated and used for internal purposes only. It cannot be traced to you and is not used to attempt to derive information about you.

To improve the quality of our service, we ask you on some pages to voluntarily provide information such as your name, address telephone number, e-mail and address and the type of information and services that you are interested in.

When ordering or purchasing certain services and products online - e.g. a travel card - you are required to provide certain items of personal information so that we can process your request.

No provision of information to third parties

We do not sell your personal information to third parties outside the SBB Group, nor do we share it with them. Exceptions: External service providers who have been contracted by us to deal with your enquiry or order and who cannot do so without the necessary data; other franchised railway companies in Switzerland. We guarantee that all organizations that receive data from us comply with data protection and security requirements.

Cookies

In certain cases, we use what are known as "cookies". You can configure your browser to display a warning before cookies are saved. You can also choose to dispense with personal cookies and the advantages that they offer. If you do so, however, you will not be able to use certain services.

E-mails / E-newsletters

SBB will send you e-mails or e-newsletters only with your express permission. You can unsubscribe from e-mails or e-newsletters at any time.

Please remember that any unencrypted data can be read or modified by unauthorized third parties.

Forums and chatrooms

sbb.ch and other online services offered by SBB provide interactive forums such as chatrooms, message boards and other platforms. Please remember that posting messages to these forums makes them public.

Storage and security of your data

SBB takes reasonable precautions and uses appropriate security technology to protect your data. Data are only stored for as long as necessary. As a rule they are deleted after six months.
